Our teacher's philosophy is a big part of what sets us apart from other platforms! We don't support a one-size-fits-all approach…
✗ One-size-fits-all approach ✗
➜ Start from the beginning, follow a set pace using a single method of instruction (e.g., textbooks or flashcards).
We instead support Individualized instruction (methods, materials, and pace are adapted to ensure all students' needs are being met)…
✔ Individualized instruction ✔
➜ Start at any level, move at your own pace with various learning aids to help retain and apply new information.
We do this through Progressive Learning…
➜ Progressive Learning (building upon prior knowledge, with difficulty increasing as foundational concepts are mastered.)
…and positive reinforcement techniques!
➜ Positive reinforcement (leads to positive learning outcomes, where small successes boost motivation and confidence.)
Ever gotten a flashcard wrong multiple times and still couldn't remember it? This is called "blocking," where negative associations hinder future learning.
This works both ways. Ever gotten a flashcard right multiple times? It's because dopamine reinforces the behavior, making the correct answer easier to recall.
Immersion works the same way. Let's say you're watching your favorite show in Japanese (no subtitles), and you recognize a word.
"Yes, yes! I know that one!" Cue dopamine boost!
But what about the thousands of other words that you also studied but didn't recognize?
Immersion effectively prevents negative reinforcement by rewarding recognition and saving you from that potentially harmful negative reinforcement.
Individualized instruction, building upon prior knowledge, Progressive Learning, etc. They all do the same thing—They set students up for success! And these small successes make a HUGE difference in who actually makes it to the finish line.
On a more personal note, as a teacher, I have seen the brightest of stars lose their light to negative reinforcement (bad teacher, difficult home life, traumatic event, etc)
If you're reading this as a learner who has "given up" or no longer considers themselves "capable" of learning a language. Hear me now—you are still bright, and you are capable of anything you put your mind to! These negative associations are not permanent, and you can rewire them!
Other platforms | Kanji Sensei |
---|---|
Limited materials and usually only 1-2 areas of focus (kanji, vocabulary, or grammar) | We teach it all—kanji, vocabulary, and grammar (writing coming soon!) |
Lack of organization | All lessons are organized by JLPT level, making it easy for test takers to dive right in or study for upcoming exams! |
Lack of customization options | Customizable mnemonics and flashcard sets! (with more customizations coming soon!) |
Must start from a beginner level, regardless of prior knowledge. | We track your progress across the site. You start at any level, skip ahead, or go back—no mods required! |
Time-based SRS systems. Progress is slowed, with mandatory reviews, daily limits, etc. Levels take a set time to complete, around 7-12 days, no matter how consistent you are or how well you do. Mistakes cannot be overridden without 'cheats' or 'mods,' potentially keeping you at a lower level for longer. | Our "system" is based on frequency. There are no mandatory reviews or limits on how quickly you can progress! Mistakes can be overridden for any reason, at any time, and your progress cannot be delayed. If you're struggling with a specific card (low retention), you'll see it more often. If you're close to mastering a card (high retention), you'll see it less often. |
Mistakes can lead to a sunk cost fallacy. "But I've already spent so much (time, money, etc.) on this platform! I can't just quit!" | "Leveling up" is at your discretion—Review it, or don't! For a high-level learner, each of our sets can be completed in around 1-2 days or less! |
Things like kanji readings are taught in isolation, which slows down progress even more. | We rarely teach anything in isolation. We teach through the lens of relevant vocabulary/in-context usage with engaging short stories and comprehension questions for practice! |
Some users report feeling dissatisfied with the amount of time, money, etc., invested, and what it really got them. | Our curriculum is designed to help you learn effectively while keeping things fun and engaging. We have one goal, and it's to see you learn how to read! |
We cover 1,700 Kanji & 4,500 Vocabulary words from the JLPT N5-N1 level—with all visuals hand-drawn by two wonderful artists!
But art takes time and financial support! We plan to "fully" launch within the next year, but you can help us go 9000% faster by supporting us on Patreon!
Future membership will cost just $5.00/month , covering kanji, vocabulary, and grammar with discounted annual and lifetime plans available year-round.
But (for a limited time) you can avoid this cost completely by supporting us on Patreon!
